Where Are the Best Hiking Trails in Maine?

Outdoor enthusiasts love the state of Maine! The rocky beaches, temperate forests, and rolling hills of The Pine Tree State have captivated visitors and locals alike for centuries. It’s no surprise, then, that this state boasts some of the most desirable hiking trails along the Eastern Seaboard! While there are plenty of memorable routes to explore, we believe that the best hiking trails in Maine can be found in the Midcoast region. Here are just a few of our favorite places to take the path less traveled by.

In addition to some of the best hiking trails in Maine, the Midcoast region features a wide variety of nautical activities, boutique shopping, and delicious dining. Where to Find the Best Hiking Trails in Maine

Boothbay Harbor, Maine

The town of Boothbay Harbor is known for seasonal events like the Pemaquid Oyster Festival, attractions like the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and its friendly residents. It also happens to boast some of the best hiking trails in Maine! Visitors might not find the toughest hikes in Maine here, but they will find breathtaking views of the ocean, glimpses of striking lighthouses, and parks with plenty of interesting history to discover. Popular spots like Sugarloaf Mountain and Acadia National Park are always good choices for hikers, but, for visitors who prefer something off the beaten path, Boothbay Harbor is the place to be.

The Boothbay Region Land Trust

The Boothbay Region Land Trust is one of the Midcoast region’s best-kept secrets! This nonprofit organization operates over 30 miles of wooded hiking trails in the Boothbay Harbor area. All year long, the organization allows guests to enter any of the area’s hiking trails for free. The Land Trust offers so many excellent hiking opportunities; here are three of the best to try first.

Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve

At 47 acres, Lobster Cove Meadow Preserve is one of the largest Boothbay Region Land Trust preserves. Here, hikers encounter wetlands, fields, and forested uplands. Any trail within this preserve offers prime opportunities for wildlife viewing; over 140 species of birds reside here! A plus of hiking through this preserve is getting to view blankets of wildflowers and multitudes of butterflies between spring and fall (the best time to hike in Maine).

Hendricks Head Preserve

One of our favorite easy hikes in Maine is the Hendricks Head Preserve! This forested trail system is located just over the swing bridge in Southport, only a few minutes away from Boothbay Harbor. We think this preserve has some of the best hiking trails in Maine because they are just steps away from the beach! Choose the Hendricks Head Trail, a half-mile hike, and take in stunning views of pine forests and rocky ledges overlooking the sea. Emerald carpets of moss and quartz-filled rock define this popular trail.

Gregory Hiking Trail

Those seeking a tranquil, heavily-wooded hike will love the Gregory Hiking Trail. Located just over the Knickercane Bridge traveling away from Boothbay Harbor, this off-the-beaten-path spot is one of the lesser-known hiking trails in southern Maine. Hikers traversing this loop encounter sweeping views of the Back River, plenty of native flora, and wildlife such as bullfrogs, deer, birds, and more. The trail is also surrounded by a diverse forest of trees including evergreens, oaks, maples, aspens, and birches.
