The Boothbay Railway Village Is One of the Best Area Attractions

The Boothbay Railway Village is a popular spot for traveling families. There are, however, numerous ways for adults to have a wonderful time at this one-of-a-kind attraction! Equal parts museum and train station, the Railway Village offers seasonal events, exhibits, and fun demonstrations that will thrill all ages. Here’s what to know before visiting!

Museum History

The Boothbay Railway Village story begins with a man named George McEvoy, a train and railroad enthusiast. By 1963, he had filled his family home in Grafton, Massachusetts, with a significant collection of railroad memorabilia. He realized that he needed to find a place to store his growing collection, so he purchased Freeport Station. This location would later become today’s Railway Village Museum!

In 1965, McEvoy’s establishment opened its doors as the first public railroad museum in the state of Maine. McEvoy and his friends spent that summer installing the tracks for the steam engine that would operate on the property. The museum enjoyed many successful years and officially became a nonprofit organization in 1981.

What to Do and See

McEvoy’s reason for bringing the Railway Village to life was to educate the public about how the steam engine and automobile changed life in Midcoast Maine. Even to this day, his museum does just that! A visit normally entails taking a ride aboard the 30-acre museum’s 100-year-old steam locomotive, seeing an original Ford Model T, exploring interactive exhibits, and going on specialty tours. There’s truly something for everyone at the Railway Village, and no two visits are exactly alike!

This historic site is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. between May and October. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $6 for children between the ages of three and 18. Children under three are free. Well-behaved, leashed pets are welcome on the museum grounds.

Take That Special Someone to a Railway Village Event!

The Boothbay Railway Village is well known as a top activity for children, but anyone can have an amazing time there! The diverse events at Maine’s Boothbay Railway Museum are great ways to enjoy a unique date with that special someone. Each time of year brings a unique festival, workshop, or holiday celebration. Then, in October, the Annual Fall Foliage Festival boasts a variety of vendors, food, and live entertainment.
