About the Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival
The Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival is a high-spirited autumn event that provides education to the young and old about agricultural science. Its mission is to promote the education of citizens about the horticultural process of growing pumpkins. Not only does it give the community an economic boost, but it provides a chance for the community to come together and celebrate one of the season’s most popular harvests.
4 Things to Expect at the Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival
The festival takes place every Columbus Day weekend and entertains visitors of all ages with a bounty of activities. Here are some of the festival’s most popular main events.
Each year, local artists transform 60-70 giant Atlantic pumpkins into incredible works of art. The carved, painted, and decorated pumpkins are displayed throughout Downtown Damariscotta for the public to enjoy and take photos with. Visit the Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival website to view pumpkin art from previous years.
2. Pumpkin Boat Regatta
Would you believe that you can actually use a carved pumpkin as a boat? If you need to see it to believe it, you won’t want to miss the Pumpkin Boat Regatta on Damariscotta Harbor! This is one of the festival’s most popular events. You may choose to watch the paddleboat division, motorboat division, pumpkin boat polo, or all three! The winning team wins the golden gourd trophy. For the best view of the regatta, be sure to find a spot along the harbor or view the action at the Lincoln Theater live-stream.
3. Damariscotta Pumpkin Drop
There is no better way to start the fall season than watching massive Atlantic pumpkins plummet over 180 feet before smashing into the targets below. The pumpkin drop is a thrilling event that supports recycling. After giant crane carries them nearly 200 feet in the air, pumpkins drop onto a variety of targets including junked police cars and double-deckers. Afterward, the pulp from the smashed pumpkins is fed to pigs at local farms.
4. Giant Pumpkin Parade
Come one, come all! The Queen of Pumpkins invites visitors from all over to enjoy the Giant Pumpkin Parade through the streets of Damariscotta. This event is a favorite for families and gives you the chance to become a“squashbuckler,” also known as the Queen of Pumpkins’ loyal subject.
