The 3 Best Things to Do in Maine in December
1. Attend the Boothbay Festival of Lights
Each winter, the Boothbay Festival of Lights illuminates the area with warmth and joy. The whole town participates in retail and dining specials, and a variety of events are offered. Whether visitors prefer to shop until they drop or to gaze at creative light displays, they’ll find plenty of ways to savor the season at this delightful festival.
This year, between November 17 and December 31, visitors can attend the 2017 Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Aglow. This part of the festival features a mesmerizing display of twinkling lights that take over the Upper Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Though it’s known primarily as the largest Christmas light show in Maine, Gardens Aglow also features a great selection of food and entertainment. Enjoy a s’mores pit, freshly popped popcorn, and local art. Hungry for more than just snacks? Dine at The Kitchen Garden Cafe, the Gardens’ restaurant serving cocktails and appetizers.
Gardens Aglow is going to be one of the best Maine winter festivals of 2017, so don’t miss it! To make the most of your visit, take advantage of our special Boothbay Festival of Lights and Gardens Aglow Package! As a part of this Maine winter vacation package, receive lodging, two tickets to the big event, and a fresh breakfast each morning of your stay.
2. Learn About Ancient Life at the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum
The Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum is a wonderful indoor activity for history buffs. Just one hour west of Boothbay Harbor, this museum is one of Bowdoin College’s educational installments. Instead of traditional American history, it offers insight into ancient Arctic people and how their culture came to be. The exhibits change throughout the year, but they always feature exploration artifacts, equipment, traditional Inuit art, contemporary Inuit art, and information on Arctic animals and ecosystems.
Admission is free to the Peary-Macmillan Arctic Museum, and the hours are Tuesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Free tours are available for groups who want personal guidance through the museum. We guarantee you will leave having learned something new and interesting!
3. Brave the Cold and Blaze a Trail
There’s nothing more invigorating than braving the Maine winter temperatures and hiking one of the state’s amazing natural trails! The Boothbay Region Land Trust is an ideal place to start, and it’s just a few minutes outside of town. All year,, this organization’s well-groomed trails are free to access. On a brisk hike here, there are meadows, forests, wetlands, and scenic vistas to enjoy. Easy, moderate, and challenging hikes are available through the Land Trust, so people of all skill levels will love a visit.
